It's hard to think that we have already been here a year. Even looking back it seems too surreal for most of us - that time when we packed the old site up and brought it over here in the rush of just three days.
Even now I sort of wonder if it was all worth it or not.
I will apologize right now, that nothing in this thread will be super fancy or anything - I literally did not have any time to put anything together, as far as graphics go.
Today marks the site's birthday, it's first-year anniversary of survival in a sea of dying hobbies.
Not many realize that it takes a lot for a site to survive in it's infancy (3-4 months) and the largest hurdle is after 6 months when people begin to trail off or get lazy with their work. They feel that things are too mundane after they settle into their roles; and without things like events that stem of motivation fades for many people because they are looking for self-satisfaction that joining a new site provides.
Out of all these, of whom have wandered in and out, those of you who have been around the longest have stuck with the good and bad times.
- Though, in a way not many members ever remember those "bad times" that we use to have.
For you new members out there which are not aware of how our site was created, I will share a little story.
- In 2011 I was forced to deal with a problem, a very large one in which was causing turmoil for an entire community of 40+ members on a previous site which some of us belonged to. This site was horribly ill-managed and run poorly by several people that were clueless about how to treat people sincerely.
To them, roleplaying was a sense of self-fulfilling desires of their grotesque fantasies and their habits of treating those around them like a commodity was ultimately what led to the decision that I had to step in.
If I were asked how I felt about making that decision, and if anything would change if I had to do it again, I would have to say no.
Sure, in a way those whom wronged everyone may feel injustice and that I did a terrible thing; but in reality I did what had to be done and I am not proud to have to say that. In my opinion, none of it should have happened from the start.
Due to these events, and those that followed, over 30 members quickly helped me pack up all our belongings from the old site and transfer it to a new one. 10 of us worked night, and day, saving over 2,000 threads from all our members (profiles, character information, templates, roleplay threads, and yes... account information right down to the number of posts each person was noted to have made.)
In less than two days an exact replica of the site was created and everyone was able to access all their information as if nothing happened. This, in and of itself was no easy feat to overlook. It was the willingness of an entire community wanting to move forward into the future and do what was right for one another and because of this we are still here today.
Sure, not everything is updated as quickly as I want it to be; not many of you realize how little sleep I get at times when working on all these events or getting all sorts of records written down to help you with creating profiles. My want is to create a near-flawless system in which anyone (new or old) can find exactly what they are looking for in a dedicated section of the forum without searching around lost.
So far everything has went well, this next year will see the last of "WIP" threads which are placeholders for information and also it will be the end of "Season One".
I do not know exactly what the future will bring, but with proboards switching to V5 I can only hope that I can get all the scripts transferred for keeping the design of this site unaltered. I think, out of everything, that is my greatest fear for this place. Updating a whole database for a forum and changing how things work on the server can have some really bad effects for us; and since we have no programmers on the site in which are willing to ever help me with scripting I am, more or less, at the whim and fancy of random coders over on the proboards support forum as far as keeping all of my skin layouts are concerned. For the members which have stayed with us a whole year I will have a badge award made up by this weekend.
For the members which have recently joined us since summer I will have a sticker made up by this weekend.
Sure, they may not be much but it is my way of saying thanks for supporting our site and making sure that we never feed trolls or allow them to ruin our hobby.
Thanks, and I hope you will stick with us another year! ~ Rin
It is difficult to grasp it's been a year now. It all does feel surreal at this point. With the onset of winter comes the continuation and culmination of a year's worth of writing and story lines. Through the hardships from moving to departed players we have endured and will continue to do so. More and more if you ask yourself if it was all worth it; the answer should be yes.
It has not been easy and I have to say personal things in the life of the Archer class have caused some distance but I am still here and will continue to be. So Happy Birthday/Anniversary Type-Rn. The best is yet to come.
