Well, Saito had finally convinced him. It had taken a few days of nearly tripping over stacks of books when coming to Sentenza's home to deal with business of varying kinds, but Saito had finally convinced Sentenza to store his library at the clinic, where hopefully it would also be of use to Saito.
The apartment over the autogarage had started to become cluttered with books and texts on onmyoudo and a variety of mythologies. Sentenza would start doing research or refreshing his memory and leave a book out. This developed into a stack and it had started becoming hazardous to walk around the apartment.
The black Mercedes sedan pulled up in front of the clinic and stopped. The engine ceased its steady purr. The exhaust flowing from the tailpipe in thin wisps cut off.
Setenza left the car brusquely, closing the door with a stiff gesture that almost qualified as a slam. The back seat contained numerous boxes of books, as did the spacious trunk. Books packed each box, having made full use of the space available.
Sentenza hadn't wanted to waste the space since he wanted to get this done in as few trips as possible. Less gas used.
He picked up a box then headed inside the clinic since he knew Saito had been waiting for him here. "Saito! I'm here, could you help me bring all these books inside." He called out into the clinic, waiting for Saito to come out from wherever he was. He also needed to know where exactly to set these books. While he waited, he set the books down and opened the box, picking out a random volume to leaf through while Saito took his time getting there to help his teacher.
The book started giving him . . . interesting ideas. Perhaps something that would aid in the effectiveness of another of his spells . . .
He'd have to test this out with Saito to see if he could develop something. In the mean time, he thought he could make this spell work.
It felt like a foreboding night as the clouds hid the starry skies. Not that the stars came out anyway with the city lights. But it did hide the moon from view, which yielded that same feeling. But Saito did not have the time to worry about it. For tonight, he would just be busy with Sentenza coming in. After a brief "discussion" about the clutter in the older onmyouji's garage, it was agreed that they would move them down to the basement where there should be some room for them. Upon his name being called, the youth popped out from the hallways to give a nod in greeting.
"Oh, you're here."
Saito glanced behind Sentenza to see the sedan. It was a really nice car. He remembered the numerous times he's seen it roaming around the streets in California. It served as a status of the wealthy. Do detectives get paid well for this? That was something he would have to ask later.
"Yeah, let's head over to the basement. I'll show you."
The teen gestured the detective to follow him. As the duo walked through the narrow hallways, Saito finally turned a doorknob to yield what seemed to be a blatant darkness concealing the staircase. An abyss that seemed equally disturbing. But he flicked on the switch to let in the light. And suddenly staircases could be seen.
He walked down the rickety stairs. Upon descending, there was an earthy odor found in many basements. It would seem a little bit too long of a journey as they walked down the stairs. As they finally reached the ground, the sight of cement walls would greet them. It would be very wide for a basement with an understandably high ceiling. It had a place to study Onmyoudo with a shelf for books and a desk. While at the same time, it was a place for physical training with the training dummies and practice weapons in the room.
Of course, there was still that locked door to the right. Saito never got the chance to try to bother with it. And he wasn't too keen to mess with it anyway.
"Set it over there by the desk," he pointed a finger over there, "I like to keep the place divided. Anyway, let's get this done."
Sentenza would set the box he carried as directed. Then they would return back to the car for more...
It didn't take long after the epiphany for his apprentice to appear. He gave the younger man a short nod, then put the book away back into's cardboard bed. Sentenza hoisted the box up and he followed Saito.
Saito led him to the basement, where he set the box down in the designated location. "By the way, if you ever need access to any of the books, feel free to make use of them. It would be selfish of me to keep you from sharing the knowledge."
Without much more than that said, Sentenza returned to his car and grabbed another box to carry to the basement. He continued formulating the spell idea he had. While he was at it, perhaps the basics of Seiryu could help him develop a lesser spell to be more practical against vampires.
The way Saito had gawked at him upon finding out his apparent uselessness and inexperience against vampires stayed with him. It wouldn't do to burn through his ki on vampires by using Seiryu continuously.
He'd work with Saito to develop the spells. Perhaps it would help Saito's training to see how his senior worked?
Sentenza found himself excited by the opportunity, which rather than registering in his face, registered as him increasing his pace in transporting the boxes so the two could get to their work.
Oy, oy, slow down. Geez, I know you're excited, but god, you're going to use all your energy at this rate. Magatsu chided.
The ayakashi went unheeded, and quickly Sentenza had finished with his task.
Now, how to get Saito involved. Well, the straight forward approach couldn't hurt. "Saito, I've had an idea for a spell. I think it would be beneficial for your training as well as mine if you helped me develop it." Sentenza stated. There, something he had more expertise in. "I'm sure you've realized this by now, but I only learned the basics of Onmyoudo from your clan, the rest of my training I've done on my own. It might be valuable to see how to develop your own spells and techniques based on what you've learned." Sentenza continued to explain.
Without really waiting for a response from Saito, he began setting up things to test his idea. It was good the basement had a good amount of space to work in. He took an ofuda and marked it with the shape of Genbu's cardinal stars. This would be a good start for the spell.

He found himself smiling at Sentenza's offer. Knowledge of the elders are definitely something to be treasured. That was something he desperately needed. Of course, remembering back in the oil-smelling garage, there were numerous books that filled his residence. It was astounding as how much clutter there was in such a small room. In fact, that car couldn't possibly comprise all of it, would it? It just didn't look quite feasible to bring all of these texts in one journey. Surely, the senior Onmyouji just brought some of the more relevant texts for personal advancement and the vampires.
"Sure, I'll be careful to keep them in good condition when I do."
Knowing how he has so many books, it should be a given that they should be treated with some form of "respect". Or otherwise, an unpleasant form of Sentenza may emerge. That was definitely something Saito would not want.
Having already led Sentenza to the basement, they would both return back to the car to bring back more of the boxes left over on its leather-bound seats. It didn't take very long as the distance between the car and the basement were not even half a mile. But, the younger apprentice did notice there was some kind of... liveliness in his senior's very movements. Was he impatient? Giddy? Trying to garner some information of his feelings were really hard as the stony expression was plastered on the onmyouji's very face.
Work was finally done with the last box set down. And the lesson would begin almost immediately as Sentenza's lips parted to state what was going to happen. It appeared that the senior had a spell idea to try out. Alright, nothing drastic. Maybe there is something to learn from this.
"Sure. Let's hear it--," he began.
But Saito found himself cut off when work was already being done for this occasion. Closing his jaw shut, he instead decided to watch silently at how the very spell itself was being set up. Eyes peering over Sentenza's shoulder, a sliver of rice paper was being used. Instead of being blank like the ones his junior used, this one had a star constellation of the Big Dipper, interestingly enough.
"It's meant to trap spiritual entities and temporarily stun them." Sentenza replied to Saito. "The issue with my spell invoking Seiryuu is that it requires a specific distance between me and my target, as well as hoping they'll stay in place while I move in. This will help ensure I can trap them first, then knock them down."
That seemed a sufficient explanation of the purpose of the spell. Finally, Sentenza finished up the preparations for the spell.
. . . now how to test it.
Sentenza glanced at Saito.
You know you want to.
Sentenza didn't respond.
There's no other way and you know it.
Sentenza sighed and gave in. "I hate to ask this Saito, but I need you to step in and test the strength of the spell so we know if we need to make any modifications to it." Sentenza stated to Saito before stepping back from the network of talisman's he'd created, once more recreating the shape of genbu's cardinal stars with the tags already inscribed with them.
Hopefully this wouldn't harm Saito terribly. In fact, hopefully it wouldn't harm him at all. It would just be like a taser. A spiritual taser invoking an important constellation in the mysticism he and Saito practiced.
This cannot end well.
Nothing else to do. Just needed to let Saito try the spell and hope it worked.
Once this was tweaked, perhaps they could get to work on a more efficient exorcism spell for Kenshin himself. It wouldn't due for Saito to need him and to have to make elaborate preparations to attack something simple. Or to call on his student's aid for a simple ghoul or vampire for fear of wasting Ki on a spell too powerful to be truly useful.
"At worst, I will heal you if necessary." Sentenza stated to Saito. He still hoped he wouldn't have to.
"That sounds pretty useful," the youth remarked thoughtfully.
Saito nodded as he understood Sentenza's explanation. To sum it all up, it is a spell to trap people upon stepping seeing how it is made on the floor. That much said, it does sound pretty useful if used against speedier enemies than himself. No doubt there would be some within the vampires. The onmyouji would simply watch and learn from this, hell, it may help him in the long run. Then he felt his eyes on him as his tutor fell silent. Despite not saying anything, the boy could already feel a familiar dreadful feeling as he instinctively knew what is going to happen next.
The detective asked for his cooperation. The teenager stared at the array on the floor with much foreboding. It's one thing to test if it could activate, but it's a whole another thing to test the strength. He gulped at this. While it's understandable as a magus and an adherent to onmyoudo, it would be indeed be worrying to test it for gauging its power. Normally he would use a disposable shikigami, but those are really the types that can just go down easily. Not exactly the best for gauging anything in power.
"Well, if you insist," he finally gave in with a sigh, "Wish me luck."
With his next few steps, Saito is finally inside the array.
And so, Saito entered the array Sentenza had set up.
The moment he was entirely inside a shock would go through his body and briefly lock it up. A brief stunning sensation, maybe long enough for a single attack to connect, but not what Sentenza had in mind for the purpose of the spell.
"Thank you, Saito. I think it needs more than this though, and I have an idea what it needs." Sentenza stated to Saito. "Without an incantation or anything else to lend it strength, it doesn't have enough force behind it." It couldn't hurt to maybe alter the inscriptions on each Ofuda.
Sentenza proceeded to pick up the remains of the spell and start anew. He decided the best way to boost it up to the needed strength was both an incantation and a mudra, just to give it an extra oomph.
Once again, the array of Ofuda were set out in the shape of Genbu's cardinal stars. Rather than repeating the stars again, the new inscription was the mansion each cardinal star represented. Essentially, making a complete version of Genbu. Perhaps not integral to the spell, but at least giving it more backing. Perhaps he could do away with such a strong invocation when not as much strength was needed.
With some brief thought, Sentenza decided upon the proper incantation for the spell. He clasped his hands into the Gebaku mudra, interlocking his fingers together. The incantation needn't be anything too intense, he thought. " Great Genbu, halt my enemy so that I may purify them." Sentenza stated.
Okay, the spell felt more prepared now.
"The spell should be ready for another test now. I warn you, this may be more unpleasant, so brace yourself. It may harmlessly stun you, it may actually create some discomfort. I apologize, but we don't really have another test subject in these circumstances." Sentenza stated.
OOC; Go ahead and RP out the effects, Saito should step in and be stunned for the remainder of the post. Sentenza can revive him then they can move on to the next spell for training.
Despite the slight trepidation he was feeling, Saito committed himself to observing how his senior was setting up the experi-- spell. There was no use in being gloomy about it, at the least learn something from the experience; assuming that he survives. Preparations and the incantation ticked him off that the spell is aligned with Genbu the Black Tortoise. The mentioning of the name and the ofuda formation into the Big Dipper are heavy evidence of its alignment.
"Well, I've always wanted to feel what it's like to be tazed," the youth joked with a rather stiff smile.
Of course, that was a lie. Saito is very well acquainted what it's like to be on the receiving end of a lightning-based spell. Muscles tensing, the uncomfortable and wrong feeling, the pain... Oh yes, this was going to be such a great experiment. The kind you'd have an idea what it would be like, but completely oblivious of how disastrous it could end up. The thought of it caused him to grow a grim grin at it. But then again, Sentenza is a whole lot more experienced. Not like the guy is a novice like him.
With a deep breath, he finally stepped onto the arrangement.
The onmyouji flinched as the order of the talismans sparked with Ki. Flinched? No-- the better word would be spasmed into place as he felt an authoritative flow of energy stopping in his tracks. His whole body illuminating bright light that served to give a look of his skeletal structure.
His lips spilled the unintelligible, "BLARGHVLARGHGWARSPAARLASDF!"
As soon as the spell finally spent its energy, Saito collapsed face first as steam started to waft off his body.
OOC: Welp, tried to do a bit of comedy here. Yeah, not original. But what the hey, everyone likes to hurt Saito the Derp.
The spell, seemed perhaps a tad strong for Sentenza's original intent.
Fucking. Awesome! Magatsu replied to the events that took place with Saito.
Don't laugh at his suffering. Sentenza replied to his permanent companion, accompanied by the mental equivalent of a sigh.
Sentenza needed to revive Saito. How though?
Cold Water. Tried and true.
It seemed a bit cruel to shock him out of his current state with something so abrupt, but Sentenza couldn't deny the effectiveness. With a sigh, he conceded to Magatsu's strategy.
He went upstairs, found a sink and filled it with cold water, then carried it back downstairs. With a single motion and a swing of the bucket, the cold water would engulf Saito and hopefully bring him into a state of awareness.
"Thank you for your aid, Saito. I believe it a relief to you to know that I will be working on a second spell, but I will not require your assistance in testing it." Sentenza stated to the revived Saito before getting to work and starting to concentrate on the best way to go about a weaker spell.
It seemed the best method might be to simply try to scale back his current spell. Seiryu packed a massive punch, it shouldn't be too difficult to reduce the ki use so that he could exorcise lesser foes without such an excess of Ki used.
"I am blessed in the creation of this next spell in that it is easier to scale back something you already know than to build something new or try to expand on something you already know." Sentenza stated to Saito. A bit obvious, but still a good piece of advice if Saito decided to work on creating his own spells any time soon.
Sentenza inhaled and shot forth a small burst of ki from his fist in time with a punch. A tad anemic, it needed some work, likely another incantation.
